Pop Goes the World

Pop music. If you don't at least admit to having a few guilty-pleasure favorites, you're either a boring snob or you're dead inside. Here's a few of my favorite pop videos

1. Girls Aloud- Biology
The British get all the fun popstars. They still get girl groups like this- all we ever get is horrible crap like the Pussycat Dolls. I covet pretty much all the clothes in this video. I also covet the Girls' ability to dance in heels. I'm doing well if I can walk without looking drunk or stupid.

2. Polecats- Make a Circuit With Me
Yeah, I know they say they're Rockabilly, but they're British. Come on, you can't be Rockabilly and have a monarch. If you can't drive to Memphis, you're just New Wave.

3. Rachel Stevens- I Said Never Again (But Here We Are)
What Prison Is Like in England: Lots of makeup, access to good hair extensions, slutty outfits, co-ed accomodations, good-looking men, one guard who sits in a little room watching video monitors, being in cells is optional... I could handle that.

4. McFly- Ultraviolet
From Top of the Pops. I maybe need to stop with the British stuff here.

5. Evonne Hsu- Da Feng Chui
There's an American. Based in Taiwan now, but born and raised in Texas. And based on the comments, I'm not the only one watching IMF.

6. Alanis- An Emotion Away
My first exposure to Alanis' musical work. Boy was I surprised a few years later when Jagged Little Pill came out. I wonder if this is when she was with Dave Coulier?

7. Tarkan- Simarik
Turkish pop! I'd hit it. There's this, too, but it's all skippy.

8. Tom Jones- It's Not Unusual
I'll say it here for all the internet to see: I love Tom Jones. Love him. I'm more like Carlton than I want to admit.

9. Debbie Gibson- Electric Youth
Last time I had a New Kids video, and here's Debbie Gibson. I played the shit out of this tape. Yes, tape. I also loved Electric Youth perfume.

10. Men Without Hats- Pop Goes the World
The title of the post. This is a better song than "Safety Dance."

Pop. Yay.

Since I Haven't Updated This Site in a Long Time...

It's a shitload of videos! No theme.

1. Tokyo Jihen- Dynamite
I love Shiina Ringo; I love Brenda Lee. Of course I'm gonna love the former covering the latter.

2. Moxy Fruvous- My Baby Loves a Bunch of Authors
Fruvous. Yeah. Buy Bargainville. Now. Then buy the rest of their stuff. You'll thank me later. On a side note, could Jian Ghomeshi be any cooler?

3. The Trews on CBC's "Play"
Yes, Jian Ghomeshi could be cooler, because here he is in his post-Fruvous gig hosting an entertainment show on CBC, in the episode that introduced me to the Trews.

4. A Very Special Christmas Box
I only like Justin "PAB" Timberlake when he's hosting SNL, I promise.

5. New Kids on the Block- Hangin' Tough
I have no excuse for this one, other than the fact that, yes, I do realize how lame it is. And I'll probably have to explain it to my kids someday. "Yes kids, people really did dress that way. Yep, girls had bangs like that. Yes, yes I did. Once you got the hang of it, it didn't take that long. Yes, lots of hairspray. What? Oh yeah, guys really did shave lines in their hair like that. No, I went to a New Kids concert in sixth grade but I didn't cry. No, I did not keep any of my clothes from then. Even if I hadn't thought that neon shit was completely lame when grunge came along, your Grandma threw away everything that didn't fit us anymore."

6. Black Oak Arkansas- Jim Dandy
It's Ruby Starr! You may have to log in to see it. I don't know why it got flagged. One of the comments suggests it's for "excessive sausage smugglin'." Hee.

7. Calories Blah Blah- You Know I Do
I really like this song, and I like animation in videos. I used this in a mix I made recently.

8. Mr. Belvedere Opening
You know what I miss? Opening themes on sitcoms. You don't see minute-long clipstravaganzas like that anymore. And why did both this show and "Who's the Boss?" have "someone opens the door to find the housekeeper-applicant standing there" scenes in their openings? Look.

9. Juicy Fruit water-skiing commercial
You know what else you don't hear much anymore? Commercial jingles. It's all real songs now. Radio still has some jingles. My undying love and admiration go to the first person who can get me an mp3 of the "Music Shop Has Electronics" song- especially if it includes the verses.

10. Teen Wolf cartoon intro
I bitched about not finding this a few months ago, and now here it is.

11. 54-40- I Go Blind
Fuck Hootie. Nah, not really, but the original here is far superior to the cover they did.

12. Blue Rodeo- Lost Together
Okay, here's the deal on this one. This is one of my favorite songs ever, and I want to share it with people. However, the little slideshow that accompanies the song is just ridiculous. Royal bootlicking, and half the images still have the Getty Images watermark. So turn it up and turn away from the monitor.

13. Weird Al Yankovic- This Is the Life
This is from the movie "Johnny Dangerously," which I own but have never watched. I've seen it before, just not since I bought it.

14. Beavis and Butt-head- Beard Boys
Nobody ever gets the reference when I say "Damn, you're smooth" to scraggly-facial-haired guys. Now some of you will.

15. Rollins Band- Low Self Opinion
I was totally into this album in 8th grade. Now it's a little silly, but that's okay.

16. Baltimore County 911 Recruitment Video
My name is Stella, and I'm a 911 calltaker, 911 dispatcher, business line calltaker, business line dispatcher, police dispatcher, fire dispatcher, EMS dispatcher, after-hours utility dispatcher, switchboard operator, bullshit diverter, message-taker, "I'm sorry, there's no animal/noise ordinance in the county, there's really nothing we can do" sayer, other agency phone number finder, crazy person in the lobby babysitter, annoying person in the lobby calltaker, driver's license and criminal record finder, what officers mean as opposed to what they say semanticist, and about fifty other things. I'm not knocking what people at big call centers do, but really, even if our call volume isn't as big as theirs, we still do a lot more things than they do because we don't specialize.

17. Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom 1
I'm just lame enough to watch a video of someone playing a game I've played a bunch of times. A mostly text-based RPG at that. The music is really good, though.

18. The Ring Recut
Yes, I like recut trailers.

19. Boys Don't Cry- I Wanna Be a Cowboy
Here for no reason except that it's in my head right now.

20. Craig Wedren- Born Curious
Sorry about the sound quality, but look! A video for "Born Curious!" How cool is that?
